Method
Brown and season the turkey
- Brown the ground turkey in a large pot, then drain the fat.
- Sauté the onion for 4 minutes, then add garlic, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, and cinnamon and cook for 2 minutes until fragrant.
Simmer the chili
- Add diced tomatoes, broth, sweet potatoes, and black beans to the pot and bring to a boil.
- Simmer for 20–25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sweet potatoes are tender and the chili looks thick and cohesive.
Finish and serve
- Season with salt and pepper to taste, using a quick taste check and adjusting as needed.
- Serve hot with sour cream, cheddar, cilantro, and lime on top, so the fresh toppings stay bright.
Notes
For a thicker chili, simmer uncovered for the last 5 minutes; add a splash more chicken broth if you prefer it looser. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 4 days. Freeze for up to 3 months (leave off dairy toppings until reheating). For a gluten-free swap, confirm your chili powder contains no gluten-containing additives.
