Method
Prep the bread
- Butter one side of each bread slice so the exterior browns and crisps on the grate.
Assemble sandwiches
- Build sandwiches with butter-side out: bread, cheese, ham, turkey, cheese, bread for a melty, layered interior.
Grill over the campfire
- Place sandwiches on a campfire grate over medium heat and grill for 4-5 minutes per side until bread is golden and cheese melts, watching for clear grill marks.
Finish and serve
- Remove from heat, cut in half, and serve hot when the cheese pulls slightly at the cut edge.
Notes
Pro tip: keep the heat at medium so the cheese fully melts before the bread darkens; if your campfire runs hot, move the grate slightly farther from the coals. Store leftovers covered in the fridge up to 3 days; reheat in a skillet or on a grate until hot and re-melted. Freezing is not recommended because bread can lose texture. For a lighter option, use reduced-fat cheese and lean turkey while keeping the same grilling times.
